Play: The Story of Sunlight and Moonlight

THE STORY OF SUNLIGHT AND MOONLIGHT

ACT 1

NARRATOR 1: Long ago there lived a handsome prince named Sunlight.  Sunlight lived in a beautiful palace with his father, the KING Xanux, the ruler of the land.

NARRATOR 2: Sunlight´s mother had died when he was a baby. When he was a young man, Sunlight´s father married again.

NARRATOR 3: The new Queen moved in with her own son, whose name was Moonlight. Sunlight´s father and his stepbrother loved him dearly, but his stepmother hated him with passion.

NARRATOR 4: She desperately wanted her own son, Moonlight, to be the one who inherit the throne. Let's see how this story develops……once the evil queen is discovered.

QUEEN 1: What am I going to do? How am I ever going to get rid of that undeserving boy, Sunlight?...My son is the one who deserves to inherit the throne….

ASSISTANT 1: Maybe you could convince him to join the navy and send him to fight far far far faaaaarrr away....

ASSISTANT 2: No no no no! I Know I know...! You could give him some drops to make him sleep forever..

ASSISTANT (1) 3: Perhaps you could send the soldiers to take him away, Your Majesty…

ASSISTANT (2) 4: Shhhhh! Your Majesty I think you should do something more aggressive …you know…I am very close with the witch of the Kingdom…Sahar….maybe you would like to see him…and….

QUEEN 1: WHAT???? Um.!!.What I meant was…such a deserving boy is that Sunlight….(to the audience) I must be very careful.  No one must know how I really feel about the boy..Wait..!!!I have the perfect idea…

(to the assistants) Quick..Get my husband the KING. I am afraid I have suddenly fallen terribly ill…!!!!

ASSISTANT 1: Oh!!! Dear My Queen…is not feeling well at all….we must do something…NOW…!

ASSISTANT 2: Hurry up…!!! The Queen has a heart attack…well I think..by the way she moves…!!!

We must get the KING right away..run…

QUEEN 1: Okay, they are gone now…..I need to put on a good act.  The KING must believe I am really sick.  I will lay here on my bed…and wait…

ASSISTANT (1) 3: Your Majesty..hurry up …the Queen is very sick..

ASSISTANT (2) 4: Oh my God…Is sshe dead??? She looks in a very bad shape…

KING 1: I came as soon as I heard, My Darling…What is the matter?

QUEEN 1: I am so sick!!!It just came over me.

KING 1: Tell me what to do! I will help in any way I can!

ASSISTANT 1: Would you do that for the Queen?

KING 1: Oh yes…of course…anything…just name it dear..

QUEEN 1: Well….I do not want to be the one to tell you this but I am afraid my life depends on it. I am quite sure that Sunlight has casted and evil spell on me!!! The only way to save my life is………..to bring me the blood from Sunlight´s heart…It´s the only way…!!!

KING 1: (whispers to the audience)  What is she talking about? This is insane…! She must be mad from her sickness…I will have a goat killed and bring her its blood tonight.  She will never know the difference.  Tomorrow she will thank me that I deceived her in this way.

NARRATOR 1: (MOONLIGHT  (the son from the Queen) ENTERS SLOWLY AND TRIES TO LISTEN….)

KING 1: (to the Queen)  I will bring you the blood from Sunlight´s heart tonight.  Anything to make you feel better, my dear…..

NARRATOR 2:  (MOONLIGHT RUNS TO TELL THE BAD NEWS TO SUNLIGHT)

 

ACT 2

NARRATOR 1: Moonlight looked shocked.  He had heard the conversation between the King and his wife the Queen.

NARRATOR 2: As soon as he recovered from the shock he ran to find Sunlight…

NARRATOR 3: Sunlight was grieving to hear that his own father could be willing to  kill him

NARRATOR 4 : By the night both princes were far away in the dry and huge desert….

SUNLIGHT: I still can believe that my father would say that..I thought he really loved me…..!!

MOONLIGHT: I wouldn`t have believed it myself if I didn`t hear it with my own ears….Your father planned to give the blood from your heart to my own mother, the Queen!! How could she ask for such a thing?

SUNLIGHT: What choice was there? I am just glad you came with me…I don`t think I could have lasted these few days in the desert without you. But Moonlight,,,you don`t look good.. Are you OK?

MOONLIGHT: This hot sun makes me dizzy…I am going to sit down for a short while….you go ahead.

SUNLIGHT: No way!! We are staying together.  Look! Do you see the red door in the hill? Someone must live there. Do you think you can make it over there?

MOONLIGHT: Well I guess I can try…Oh……I can`t take another step…

SUNLIGHT: Listen, I am going to go over the hill to the red door and ask for help. You relax here.

MOONLIGHT: No problem……(he collapses on the sand…) I will wait for you here…

ACT 3

NARRATOR 1: Sunlight put his brother as confortable as possible and went to the hill where the red door was.

NARRATOR 2: When he got there he called out for help and an old man with a long beard came out….

NARRATOR 3: Quickly he told the man about his brother who was lying in the desert.  Soon both men rushed to get Moonlight.

NARRATOR 4: The hermit was called Waldorf and his sister was Bruna.  They both took care of the boys in their home.

SUNLIGHT: OK Moonlight here we are, we made it…

MOONLIGHT: What a relief to finally be inside and out of that hot Sun…Who are these people who helped us??

HERMIT: My sister and I live here. Welcome to our humble home.  When your brother told me you collapsed in the sun I knew we had to get you water and bring you inside right away

BRUNA: Here, sit down young boy.  I will bring some water and food for you.

MOONLIGHT: Oh, thank you. Sunlight do you want some?

SUNLIGHT: Oh yes..thank you. Now you have to rest…

MOONLIGHT: What are we going to do now?

HERMIT: Well, boys you can stay as long as you like.

BRUNA: It is a simple life, we have plenty of room here and we will need some help with the chores, and we sure would like some company for a change.

MOONLIGHT: What do you think, Sunlight? How about it?

SUNLIGHT: We will like this very much. Besides we can not go back home…Thank you!

HERMIT: Yes, from what you told me, I don`t think it would be wise to go back home. But we have a secret you must know…

BRUNA: Yes, boys….It happens that the KING Angus The most important ruler of this land, is a wicked and ill tempered man…He heard a PROPHECY that says that one day he will lose his throne to a young man from a strange land…

HERMIT : So he is very suspicious of any young men like you…sorry to say..

SUNLIGHT: Great!!!! What would he do if he found out we were here?

HERMIT: If he found out, which I don`t think he will…we are pretty well hidden here….He will send you both to the DAEMONS….

NARRATOR 1: Daemon were bad tempered creatures, related to Ogres, that lived in a cave nearby the Kingdom.

NARRATOR 2: No one that has entered their cave have ever come out...

BRUNA: I don`t want to tell you what would happen to you next..We just hope no one saw you on your journey through the desert..

MOONLIGHT: We would better keep a low profile. Sunlight why don`t you have a look outside?

SUNLIGHT: You bet..I am going to check outside now.

MOOLIGHT: Thank you for giving us a place to stay.  I know I would not have made it.

BRUNA: We are glad to help.

SOLDIER 1, 2, 3, 4 and (5): Where are they?

SOLDIER 1 and 2: We know they are here, we saw them in the desert.

HERMIT: What are you talking about? Who are you looking for?

SOLDIER 3: You know, the strangers, the boys…

BRUNA: Boys? What boys? We do not have boys.  There is only my brother and I..

SOLDIER 4: The KING Angus sent us to take them to the Palace. You know the rules….you must tell us where they are..

SOLDIER 4 and 5: Tell us now or you will pay…!!! (raising his fist)

SUNLIGHT: No, stop it…Don`t hurt this good man nor his sister..

SOLDIER 1: So, you are here…!!You must come with us right now…

SUNLIGHT: OK, but leave this couple alone…Please…

SOLDIER 2: Just tell us where the other young man is and no harm will come to this people..

SUNLIGHT: Oh….how can I say it?  How can I bear to tell you what happened?

SOLDIER 3 and 5: What are you talking about?  What happened?

SUNLIGHT: My poor brother died in our journey across the desert.  I had to bury him. I just wish I had stayed with him…Then we would have

perished together…Now I have to bear my sorrow alone…

SOLDIER 4: Well, I don`t see him…Maybe this boy is saying the truth.

SUNLIGHT: I told you.  I buried him in the desert. I will show you. It is a three day walk from here…I know it is somewhere out there…you know …in the sand….hot…dry…

SOLDIER 1: Do you think we should go?

SOLDIER 2: It is very hot outside…Let`s not and say we did….

SOLDIER 3 and 4: All right, young man, You are coming with us…

ALL SOLDIERS: Move it!!!!!

ACT 4

NARRATOR 1: By the time they reached the palace gates of the King Angus the sun was setting

NARRATOR 2: The King Angus, his wife, Queen Isobel and two daughters, Princess Belle and Princess Alexis were enjoying a peaceful and pleasant evening….

NARRATOR 3: Princess Belle was looking out of the balcony when she saw the group of soldiers bringing  a prisoner….with his head bowed and his hands tied in the back…But their eyes met and….a lovely look was exchanged…

NARRATOR 4: Princess Alexis was playing some music and did not see anything different…..

KING 2: Ah….you found the strangers…Good work!!!Where is the other one?

SOLDIER 1: His brother died in the desert, your Majesty.  This is the only one left.

KING 2: Not for long…Take him to the cave of the DAEMONS…..

QUEEN 2: Oh dear, wait…This young man looks like an honest and well educated boy…I do not believe in that PROPHECY…..That`s all in your mind..

PRINCESS 2: Father Please!! spare his life…

KING 2: What??....You know what the PROPHECY states.  I can not allow any male from a strange land to live here.  For all I know he may be planning to take over my kingdom..right now..

SUNLIGHT: No. Your Majesty…

KING 2: That`s what they all say..

PRINCESS 1: Father, please don`t!!!  for me?

PRINCESS 2: Father, please…listen to my sister…He looks very nice..And besides you need some help around here with all your duties..you know….

KING 2: I cannot believe that you would choose the life of a stanger over mine!!!!  You are no longer my daughter!!  I am sending you to the daemons along with this young man!!!!  GO both of you!!!!

QUEEN 2: Oh…Noooo. You can`t do that…She is our oldest daughter and she has to take care of us when we get older…and all due to a PROPHECY?????

PRINCESS 1: Oh no, Father Please…..No!!!!

KING 2: Take both of them away…now….!!!!!

PRINCESS 2: Father, please my sister…you can`t do that to her…I need her very much…And who is going to sing so beautiful as she does when I play my music?? Please….!!!!

NARRATOR 1: Inside the DAEMONS cave...

SUNLIGHT: That was brave of you to stand up for me.  But you shouldn`t have. Now you are in trouble too..

PRINCESS 1: Well, if this is what my father wants, then I have no choice but to go along with it. But you…You are an innocent stranger. It`s just not fair!!!

SUNLIGHT: Maybe not, but why should you have to give up your life for me, a stranger? That is even worse.!! Especially you, such a kind and special princess…

PRINCESS 1: Well, I just wish I could have changed my father`s mind.

DAEMON 1: What are those two humans jabbering about????

DAEMON 2: They are so worried about each other, they are not even thinking about their own fate!!

DAEMON 3: I didn`t know humans bothered to think about each other at all.  Most of them care only about themselves.  Humans  BAH…..!!!

DAEMON 4: These two are different.  They really seem to care about  each other.  It makes me loose my appetite…!!!!

DAEMON 1: Me too, well there is only one thing to do

DAEMON 2: You said it! What shall we do?

SUNLIGHT: Oh no…Here they come!!

PRINCESS1: I can`t look!!

DAEMON 3: Oh, calm down. Really all this fuss!!!

DAEMON 4: We are the ones who should be upset!

DAEMON 1: Yeah…we are the ones who are going to lose our dinner…

SUNLIGHT AND PRINCESS1: WHAT????......

DAEMON 2: We heard you talking and we never heard humans before who actually cared more about what happened to each other than about themselves.

DAEMON 3: By our magic power we break your bonds!!! From now on, we will be your friends….

SUNLIGHT AND PRINCESS1: We can`t believe this!! Oh yes, thank you very much!!!

All DAEMONS : Yuck..!!!!!Enough already, begone before we change our minds.!!!!

SUNLIGHT: Princess, you must go back at once to the Palace and I will go and  find my brother.  Then, I will return to the Kingdom and find you

PRINCESS1: And I will talk to my father in the meantime, then we will wait for you..

ACT 5

NARRATOR 1: When the Princess Belle arrived at the Palace, The King was very happy..

KING 2: Oh, my daughter…I thought I`d never set eyes on you again.  How did you get free of the Daemons??I am so sorry I sent you away!!!

PRINCESS 2: Sister!!! My lovely Sister…You are all right after all!! How did you escape? We were so sad…

QUEEN 2: My daughter…..you are back…What happened?  I was so desperately without you….I was in a big depression because of your father, The King, sent you away to those ugly Daemons…How did you escape???

PRINCESS 1: The most amazing thing happened.  This young man is different from what you think. He was so kind to me that the daemons set us free!!!

KING 2: Hmmm!!!!!Doesn`t sound like the sort of fellow who would bump me off the throne…

QUEEN 2:Very well then….He may live….…and if you enjoy his company so much he may stay here too….Though he has to stay on his best behaviour of course…

PRINCESS 1 : Of course!!!!Guess what?  Sunlight has a brother who I am sure is as brave and kind as he is..

PRINCESS 2: Is that for real sister?? A brother??? And where is he now?? Is he as handsome and brave as Sunlight???

NARRATOR 2: Suddenly Sunlight, Moonlight, Hermit and Bruna entered in the Palace…

PRINCESS 1: Sunlight!!!!Great news!!!!My father agreed to let you stay!!

SUNLIGHT: Thank you, your Majesty.  And now, may I ask for your daughter`s hand??

KING 2: Let there be a royal wedding!!!!The truth is, I am not as young as I used to be.  Being King DAY AFTER DAY can put a strain on these old bones….

QUEEN 2: Young man, you may marry our daughter and live here at the Palace…Of course the King will have to train you as you will take over the Kingdom and rule.  Your brother is also welcome to stay.

MOONLIGHT: Our father rules the land next to yours.  Have you heard any news from his kingdom?

QUEEN 2: King Xanux from the next kingdom? Is  him your father?

SUNLIGHT: Yes, have you heard any news?  Is he OK?

QUEEN 2: Yes, he is fine.  The queen died awhile ago, but strangely, no one seems too upset about it….

MOONLIGHT: I can`t imagine why not!!

King 2: Well, you father is welcome in this kingdom, too.  To visit or to stay, as he likes

SUNLIGHT AND MOONLOGHT: Thank you!! We missed him very much..

KING 2 AND QUEEN2 : We will send our soldiers to bring him the good news!!!

PRINCESS 2: We will plan a feast to celebrate.  Moonlight will you help me????

MOONLIGHT: You bet!!!Let`s go….

NARRATOR 3: The King and the queen move to the center of the stage and say..

KING 2 AND QUEEN 2: A great feast, a royal wedding, maybe two…and we can finally take it easy and do that trip around the world we always wanted to do…. This is sounding better all the time!!!!

NARRATOR 4: The PROPHECY  came true but in a very different way….
